Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on booby traps used by the Japanese. The enquiry was received on 16 July 1943 and an answer despatched on 17 July 1943. This report refers the enquirer to sketches and descriptions contained in earlier spot reports, bulletins, interrogation reports and current translations. It also contains information on the fact that when devising booby traps the Japanese drew on their experiences in China, on the increasing use of trip wires and booby traps as security measures, on the types of booby traps most commonly used and on the practice of feigning death and then attacking with hand grenades and other weapons. Of interest is a reference from Current Translations no. 47 to operations in the Buna area and the general principles associated with attacking enemy fortifications and using "every original measure".
