Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147867 of the 18th Army, 54th Line of Communication Unit, who was captured at Wari (Manokwari) on 8 May 1944. JA147867, a 32 year old Leading Private from Osaka, fled into the hills after the Allied landings at Hollandia. There he was surprised and captured by US troops. During the interrogation, JA147867 provided information on the organisation of the 54th Line of Communication Unit, conscription and exemptions from military service offered to factory workers, reduced rations for service in New Guinea, location and conditions for Allied prisoners of war working in Japan, the death of patients evacuated from Hollandia to Sarmi during the Allied landings, facilities at Palau, the sinking of No. 3 Daigen Maru on 10 March 1944, the sinking of AO Narita Maru in March 1944, an air raid on Hollandia on 5 April 1944, details of the Imaki Iron Works in Osaka and a list of other Osaka-based factories. The appendix contains an organisational chart for the 54th Line of Communication Unit.
