Content: This item is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese document salvaged from Goodenough Island on 8 March 1943. This document was taken to Goodenough Island by survivors of Teiyo Maru, part of the troop convoy sunk by Allied forces en route to Lae on 3 March 1943. It gives a fragmentary account of the Japanese plans to strengthen their forces at Lae and Salamaua. It includes a landing plan, embarkation distributions, supply inventories, distribution of transport vessels and commanders, distribution of air cover, distribution of troops, details of unloading operations, naval course charts, and sketch maps of Lae and surrounding area. It also contains preliminary interrogation reports for MATSUSHIMA Shichi-Hei, KITAMURA Yokichi, and TSURUME Tadashi.

This document provided important details about the nature and strength of Japanese forces in the area and was widely distributed.
