| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured in central Luzon between 7 and 11 February 1945 during the Allied campaign to recapture the Philippines. This item is a booklet entitled "Detonation of approaching torpedoes by firing: combat lesson 36", issued by the Army Section, Imperial General Headquarters on 27 May 1944. It contains three combat examples of the detonation of torpedoes by ship fire: Denmark Maru on 31 March 1943, Brazil Maru on 10 January 1943 and Kizan Maru on 25 January 1943. This item also contains instructions on the methods of firing and detonating torpedoes by shelling. With the Allies controlling much of the Pacific, effective countermeasures to submarine activity became increasingly important for Japanese shipping and naval operations. |
