| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147707 of the 68th Independent Anti-aircraft Battalion, who was captured at Wari (Manokwari) on 3 May 1944. JA147707, a 40 year old 2nd Lieutenant from Omori, near Tokyo, was deceived by natives when he arranged for transportation to Tanahmerah by canoe, but was instead taken to Wari and handed over to US troops. During the interrogation, JA147707 provided information on manufacturing companies near Tokyo, general wartime conditions in Japan, organisation of the 68th Independent Anti-aircraft Battalion, the tightening of conscription regulations, volunteers and enforced labour, the evacuation of civilians from Palau in January 1944, tactical methods of US aircrew, dummy gun positions at Hollandia, the dispositon of Imperial Guard Units, censorship, display of Allied aircraft following a raid on Tokyo on 18 April 1942, and the location of Allied prisoners of war at Shibaura and Shinagawa. JA147707 also provided information about conditions in Japan, rising taxation, his attitude towards capture and the war in general, morale and the lack of Japanese air support. The appendix includes an organisational chart for the 68th Independent Anti-aircraft Battalion. |
