| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA147101 of the 141st Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion Headquarters, who was captured at Talasea on 13 March 1944. JA147101, a 39 year old 2nd Lieutenant Medical Officer from Okinawa Prefecture, was ill with malaria when he fell behind his unit during the retreat from Natamo. After meeting another medical officer, they proceeded with some orderlies towards the coast. While sleeping after a meal they were surrounded and captured by US Marines. During the interrogation, JA147101 provided information on medical conventional symbols, guerilla activity in the Philippines between August and November 1942, the organisation of Field Line of Communication hospitals, medical instructions to troops, use of vitamins, disease control, evacuation of wounded, mercy killing, casualty proportions, training for medical officers in war gases and defences against them, recreational facilities, brothels in Manila and Rabaul, morale, conditions in Japan, attitude towards capture and the war, his opinion of Allied leaflet propaganda, sighting of Allied prisoners of war, the location of units around Rabaul, a chronology of the movements of the 141st Infantry Regiment between 1 January 1942 and November 1942, airfields on Formosa and Loochoo Island (Ryûkyû Islands), shipping losses, the results of Allied air attacks and that he had heard that the Allied aircrew who bombed Tokyo had been executed. JA147101 was surprised by the treatment he received upon capture and felt it was to his benefit that Japan lost the war because the government would be forced to change its policy towards prisoners of war and he could then return home. |
