| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Lae on 19 December after the fall of Lae and the beginning of the Japanese retreat across the Finisterre Ranges. This item is a book entitled "Malaya campaign", dated 8 October 1942, compiled by YOKOYAMA, Ryuichi, with a foreword by Colonel YAHAGI, Nakao, Chief of Army Information Section. It covers the Malaya campaigns, commencing with the landings at Singora and Kota Bharu, then the successive actions against Allied forces as they retreated along the peninsular. The book also covers naval operations between December 1941 and February 1942, the fall of Singapore and the meeting between Lieutenant-General Percival and General YAMASHITA to discuss the terms of surrender. This book was published for popular consumption and was not intended for instruction of Japanese troops in tactical methods. The ATIS translators noted that the "primary importance of the book is to give an additional injection of "Die-for-the-Emperor" propaganda to troops and civilians. Derogation as well as praise is used to describe the defending forces in order to show that it was a hard battle for Japanese troops but that nothing could stop them". |
