Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on Japanese reactions to Allied paratroops. This report is an information bulletin issued on 31 December 1943. It contains extracts from diaries , current translations, enemy publications and interrogation reports about the possibility of attacks by paratroops in the Buna area in September 1942, the precautions taken against paratroop attack in Rabaul and the Shortland area in the Solomon Islands, references to the defence plan for the Finschhafen area until September 1943, the interrogation of Allied prisoners regarding paratroops operations, general and local instructions for defence against paratroop attack and references to Japanese paratroops. The appendix includes two instruction sheets on combat methods against enemy paratroop, issued by No. 82 Defence Unit (Lae) on 12 September 1943. The report concluded that the Japanese were constantly aware of potential attack by Allied paratroopers and in Buna they appeared to have been particularly apprehensive about the deployment of such attacks. ATIS researchers also concluded that the Japanese and the Germans pooled their intelligence regarding the movement of Allied troops and the tactical deployment of paratroops.
