Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on the markings on Japanese ammunition. The original enquiry was received on 15 February 1944 and this supplementary answer to RR-60 issued on 4 August 1944. The report stated that the Japanese were believed to have changed their system of ammunition marking, using one colour band instead of two. This report contains more detailed information on the shells and bombs used by the Japanese Army (no additional information on ammunition used by the Japanese Navy was included). Information discussed includes classification of shell type, bursting charge markings, date and place of filling, fixed cartridge markings, propellant charge markings, markings for allowable tolerance in shell weight and the colour designation of shells.
