| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report issued on 6 February 1944 on the Japanese ration supply system for forces in the South-West Pacific Area. Based on material from late 1942 to 1943, this report contains information on the source of Japanese rations from inside and outside the South-West Pacific Area, the transport of rations to forward troops, containers for rations, bulk weight of rations, transport methods, amount and type of rations for individuals, provisions carried by individuals in various parts of New Guinea, "A" and "B" class rations, rations for patients and natives, amenities and cooking methods. The appendix includes a sketch map of Wewak in December 1942 with notes about local resources, sketches of resources and productive establishments around Rabaul and New Britain, a chart of the ration scale, a chart of the rice ration scale, a price list of canteen articles for sale by Sasebo No. 5 Special Landing Party, Tsukioka Unit, Buna Mission, on 8 January 1943, and data and instructions on rations supplied by air in October 1943. A concluding section summarises much of the information contained in the report and makes comments about plans to reduce the standard daily rations from 1.5 kilograms to 1 kilogram. During the final campaigns of the war the information compiled here by ATIS researchers would have been used by Allied commanders to direct attacks against Japanese supplies and their transports, particularly in Rabaul which supplied field warehouses in Lae and Salamaua. |
