Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 1st Class Private JA147012 of the 53rd Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion 4th Company, who was captured in Tuluvu on 4 January 1944. JA147012, a 26 year old 1st Class Private from Chiba, was exhausted and asleep in the jungle during his retreat to Tuluvu when he was captured by US troops. During the interrogation, JA147012 provided information on unit organisation, movements, the desparate situation of Japanese troops in Tuluvu without adequate supplies or attacking power. He also told the interrogators about various diseases suffered in New Guinea and in Shanghai. He said that he was suprised how well he was treated, and now realised that Japanese propaganda had deceived him in relation to the treatment of prisoners of war. The economic situation in Shanghai between 1941 and1943 was also described.
