Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on Australian coastwatchers mentioned in captured documents and the execution of prisoners at Buna. The enquiry was received on 5 August 1943 and an answer despatched on 2 September 1943. This report is a supplement to Research Report no. 32 and contains further information about the capture of two Australian coastwatchers Page and Talmadge and instructions for the treatment of Allied prisoners of war. Most of the document deals with reports of atrocities in the Buna area in August 1942 as obtained through the interrogation of Japanese prisoner YOKOTA Shigeki. The prisoner claimed that seven Australians (two men, four women and a child) were captured by New Guineans and handed over to members of the Tsukioka Unit stationed near Buna on 12 August 1942. The prisoners were executed the following day.

Presumably this account is of the capture and execution of mission workers in Sangara. The group of seven retreated into the jungle to avoid the advancing troops, but were captured by locals. After being turned over to the Japanese they were beheaded on the beach at Buna on 13 or 14 August 1942.
