Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Borgen Bay on 26 December 1943 during the campaign to capture New Britain. This item is a pamphlet entitled "Studies and training in landing operations", issued by Shipping Group Headquarters on 1 July 1943. This item contains information on providing aerial support for the convoy, transportation under enemy air and submarine attack, transportation by destroyers, unloading under air attack, barge transportation, landing procedures, supply of material and repair of boats.

This document was written in response to the losses the Japanese sustained under air attack in Guadalcanal and New Guinea. With few alternatives at hand, Japanese commanders resolved to improve landing operation techniques, the coordination between Navy and Army convoy escorts, observation techniques and the moral fibre of personnel.
