| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Hollandia on 30 April during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is a medical report entitled "Report on medical activities (in Java) February 1944", issued by Major General (medical) SUGINO Kohei. It contains a comprehensive survey of duties of medical organisation, the incidence of disease, preventative measures, and the production of quinine and other medical supplies. This item also contains an outline of the general medical situation and the activities of medical units under the command of the 16th Army for February 1944 and monthly casualty reports for the 16th Army. The document notes the "rather serious" increase in cases of malaria and dengue fever among soldiers recently arrived in the area, including a violent outbreak between 30 November and 5 December 1944 among X Force which debarked at Manokwari Island in November 1943. It also mentioned a case of suspected poisoning among the Kuantan Garrison Unit in Pahang, Malaya. 31 persons were poisoned, presumably by Allied sympathisers. |
