Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report issued on 29 July 1944 on the organisation of medical units in the Japanese Army, from small medical units at the front line to the home force. The report contains information on medical personnel attached to forward units (platoon, company, battalion, regiment), the composition of division medical units (water supply and purification, field hospitals, reserve field hospitals), the composition of Line of Communication hospitals (baggage depot medical supply section, army hospitals, army evacuation units, army water purification units), the chain of evacuation from the front line to the garrison hospital, peace and wartime organisation of medical services, the organisation of air medical services, training (medical officers, nurses, enlisted men), and equipment and medicines used by medical personnel in forward units. Sketches include a map of the Wewak 1st Field Hospital at 23 February 1943 and the 20th Division Field Hospital at Jabob (near Alexishafen) at 10 June 1943. The appendix includes the location of Japanese medical units outside Japan and reproductions of various forms used by medical departments.

ATIS researchers concluded that the high quality of Japanese medical equipment contrasted with the treatment of patients upon reaching hospital, when they did not appear to be given the same standard of post-operative care available in Allied hospitals. The majority of patients were evacuated by ship to Palau, then to the Philippines, Formosa and Japan.
