Content: This item is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Finschhafen on 23 October 1943 during the Huon Peninsula campaigns. This item is a handbook entitled "Guide to anti-tank warfare and direction for utilizing tanks", by Major SAITO Ichi'ei, and published by Shohei Kan Printing Company, Tokyo, on 25 November 1943. This item contains information on anti-tank warfare including: preparations for assault, offensive methods, cooperation between tanks, artillery and infantry, night operations, tactical use of tanks, communications, reconnaissance and security measures, and anti-tank obstacles. This document contains instructions for tank warfare in terrain similar to that of Manchuria (not jungle terrain). The instructions are based on the Infantry Training Manual and Operation Field Service Regulations, with the intention of improving Japan's self-confessed inferior tank and anti-tank units. The author uses the "Nomonhan Incident" (a tank battle between Russian and Japanese forces in August–September 1939 on the Russian–Manchurian border which resulted in a disastrous defeat for the Japanese) to highlight the inferiority of Japanese mechanised combat units compared to those of Europe.
