Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on Australian coastwatchers mentioned in captured documents, the status of Allied civilians in Japanese occupied territory and the development of port facilities in New Guinea. The enquiry was received on 5 August 1943 and an answer despatched on 16 August 1943. The report contains a brief outline of the capture of two Australian coastwatchers Page and Talmadge, an account of the treatment and movement of civilians in Rabaul and Buna, and instructions for the treatment of Allied prisoners of war. It also contains information on the capture and execution of New Guinean and Allied prisoners of war in the Buna area in 1942. The third part of the report deals with the construction and capacity of port facilities in New Britain, particularly Rabaul and Kokopo. It contains information on loading facilities, the location of food dumps, water supply, the construction of new piers, warehouses and fuel dumps.
