| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA100060 of Kurita Force, who was captured at Korako on 22 April 1944. JA100060, a 23 year old interpreter for Javanese labourers from Soerabaja (Surabaya), was in a slit trench with other Javanese labourers when he was captured by US troops. During the interrogation, JA100060 provided information on Kurita Force (a non-combatant unit also known as Hikozu Force), various personalities including Javanese chiefs, oil wells in Java, the torture and beheading of a US airman at Korako in late March 1944, facilities and armaments at Palau in late 1943, an Allied air raid on Surabaya on 23 June 1943 and the death of Javanese villagers, details of the Javanese newspaper Soewara Asia including political persuasion of reporters and editors, details of Djogjakarta-based newspaper Sinar Matahari including the political persuasion of reporters and editors, bicycles, "puppet troops" at Malang in July 1943, the destruction of railway stations in Java, transportation services and broken-down vehicles at Malang. |
