UCHINO, a 24 year old from Miyazaki, was on board Yayoi which was sent to Rabaul from Sasebo. Yayoi was attacked and sunk by the Allies. UCHINO suffered burns caused by steam at the time of the bombing. UCHINO provided information on aircraft in Truk and Rabaul which he had observed from his boat. He had some difficulty in speaking, because of his burns. He did not wish the Red Cross to contact his parents to inform of them his situation.
