| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for JA145715 of the 238th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Gun Platoon, who was captured at Melanpipi, near Kiari, New Guinea on 14 February 1944. JA145715, a 24 year old 1st Class Private (runner) rank from Gunma Prefecture, was asleep in a native hut suffering from malaria when he was captured by natives and Australian troops. During the interrogation, JA145715 provided information on Allied prisoners of war, chemical warfare and that he was shown some artillery shells in New Guinea by a member of his ammunition section and told they were gas shells, the execution of communist troops if captured in civilian clothing (communist soldiers in regular uniform were sent to work at Nanking), Allied air raids on Wewak between February and July 1943, the Mitsubishi Coal Mining Company in China, coal production levels and the use of Chinese labourers. The report also includes a sketch indicating the location of the Mitsubishi coal mines in China. |
