| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Popondetta on 19 November 1942 during the Japanese retreat from campaigns in the Owen Stanley Ranges. This item is an account of operations in the Netherlands East Indies between February and March 1942 by a Lieutenant Colonel in the Imperial Japanese Army, apparently copied from the Japanese daily newspaper "Osaka Mainichi". It details the Japanese landing at Bantam Bay on the western tip of Java on 1 March 1942, the subsequent advances to Serang and Batavia, and the surrender of British and American forces in Bandung on 12 March 1942. It also contains observations about the fall of Singapore, the condition of Japanese forces, and the calibre of Australian troops fighting in Java. |
