Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 1st Class Seaman SAKAMA Tsunekichi of Yokosuka 5th Special Naval Landing Party (Yasuda Unit) 2nd (Yoshioka) Company 4th Platoon, who was captured at Milne Bay on 17 October 1942. SAKAMA, a 37 year old from Yokohama, detailed his movements from his departure in Yokosuka in May 1942. His unit headed for Midway, but had to return to Guam. Kinryu Maru, which he boarded in Rabaul, was sunk on 27 August and he was rescued. His party departed Rabaul on 2 September and landed on the beach with provisions. After they set off to transport the provisions, they were surprised by either Australian or local troops. He went into the mountains and spent the next 40 days looking for other Japanese troops. He was captured with another Japanese soldier, KATSUKURA Kanemizu. SAKAMA could not give much detailed information on his unit, but complained that the soldiers did not receive proper instructions when they landed at Milne Bay other than "to cross a river and climb over a range" to reach an airfield.
