| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 1st Class Seaman KATSUKURA Kanemitsu of Yokosuka 5th Special Naval Landing Party 2nd (Yoshioka) Company Machine-Gun (Okawara) Platoon, who was captured at Milne Bay on 17 October 1942. KATSUKURA, a 35 year old 1st Class Seaman, was exhausted and powerless to resist when he was captured. KATSUKURA's first name is spelled as "Kanemidzu" in the report. KATSUKURA went to Midway in May 1942 and to Guadalcanal in August 1942. His unit arrived aboard Yayoi in Milne Bay on 3 September. After his party was attacked, five of them went into the mountains and wandered for over a month, searching for other Japanese troops. In the interrogation session, KATSUKURA was very critical of Japanese tactics, lack of training for the soldiers and lack of instructions from the officers. He also reported unenthusiastic attitudes among the general public towards war and conscription. |
