| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report issued on 15 March 1944 on Japanese warships and merchant vessels sunk, damaged or under construction since 1941. This is a supplement to RR-67 and includes vessels not previously on record to 1 March 1944. The report includes a chronological list of vessels sunk or damaged including date, the name of ships, location, cause of damage and a reference to the appropriate source. The report also lists newly constructed vessels including, name of ship, type of vessel, date, a brief remark (usually launch date and construction company) and a reference to the appropriate source. A summary table shows the total number of ships sunk, damaged and constructed by class of vessel up to 1 March 1944. This information was increasingly important to Allied commanders to determine the strength of Japanese shipping in the Pacific theatre and their ability to move and supply their forces. These ATIS research reports formed the basis of the comprehensive 1947 reports by the United States Joint Army-Navy Assessment Committee, "Japanese naval and merchant shipping losses during World War II, February 1947" and "Japanese naval and merchant shipping losses during World War II by all causes, February 1947". |
