| Content: | This item is a translation of an extract from an diary kept by an anonymous Japanese officer, described as being of "No.1 Battalion, No. 2 Company, No. 1 Platoon". "No. 1 Battalion" seems to be the 1st Battalion of the 22nd Naval Base Force stationed in Balikpapan, Borneo. The extract covers the period from 21 to 23 July 1945 and details the movements of the platoon behind Allied lines in the vicinity of Batakan Ketjill during the capture of Balikpapan by the Allied Forces. Mention is made of the capture and fatal shooting of a number of local people by the Japanese soldiers. The footnote of the translation says that the Japanese troops mentioned in this extract were wiped out by RAAF guards at the Batakan Ketjill waterpoint. |
