Content: This item contains brief information on Allied POWs who were captured in the area controlled by the South East Area Army and those who were captured elsewhere and transferred to Rabaul. Of the 69 Allied soldiers captured since March 1943, eight were alive in Rabaul at the time of Japan's surrender and 10 had been transferred to Japan. Fifty four British POWs were transferred from the 17th Army to the South East Area Army in March 1943. After 33 of these British POWs had lost their lives due to malaria, the rest were transferred to Watom Island. There were 18 POWs alive on the island when the war ended. Attachments include lists of POWs who had been held by the South East Area Army since March 1943. These lists are identical with those attached to AWM 82 2/301.
