Content: This item is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured in the Sanananda area on 22 January 1943 during the Japanese withdrawal from the Papuan campaigns. This item is a detailed account of the Japanese invasion and occupation of New Britain between 8 January and 5 February 1942. It contains information on landing preparations, landing operations, plans to pursue Allied forces, "mopping up" operations, company morale, materiel captured from the retreating forces. It also contains a rudimentary "battle sketch" of the area north of Kazanto (south of Rabaul), a map of the Japanese camp in Rabaul, a map of the progress of landing operations between 23 and 24 January 1942, a map of the pursuit and mopping up operations between 25 January and 5 February 1942, a situation map of No. 2 Transport Company in the Rabaul area, and a sketch of operations in the Tokin River area.

This document provided a strategically valuable insight into the invasion of New Britain and the general nature of Japanese operations. It also provided limited information about Australian prisoners of war and Australian forces retreating overland south of Rabaul and by sea.
