| Biographical / Institutional info: | The Australian National Maritime Museum houses the National Maritime Collection, which was commenced in 1986. The collection has a focus on social history of Australia's maritime heritage, and includes many items relating to the history, life and experiences of Australia's naval service personnel. |
| Content: | Three main sub-series have been identified as relating to the Australia-Japan relationship: the papers of Commander Herbert Gordon Whitebrook, documents relating to the Japanese surrender in Dutch New Guinea, and miscellaneous documents. Commander Whitebrook was an officer of the Royal Australian Navy Reserve in command of HMAS Glenelg. This collection of 222 items includes photographs of Glenelg and its personnel, and other material related to the surrender of Japanese forces on Ambon and the repatriation of Australian POWs, the survivors of Gull Force. The diary of Lieutenant Ronald L Wills describes the circumstances of the Japanese surrender in Dutch New Guinea in 1945. It also describes the living condition of the Japanese in the area. Several other items in the collection related to Australia-Japan relations include propaganda leaflets, postcards, a scrapbook on the Japanese midget submarine, several maps, and official certificates related to two Japanese individuals in Singapore. |
