Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Hollandia on 30 April 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is an instructional pamphlet entitled "Outline of anti-PT torpedo boat tactics for large mechanized landing craft", dated 21 December 1943 and issued by the Fifth Shipping Engineer Regiment. It provides information on tactical methods for Japanese landing barges against Allied patrol boats including: installation of artillery guns, the need for heavier armaments, assessments of Allied patrol boat tactics, formations, and Japanese knowledge of Allied patrol boat to aircraft communications. The item also includes accounts of landings at Finschhafen on 21 and 29 July 1943, an engagement near Point Hardenberg on 13 August 1943, movement between Madang and Finschhafen on 10 September 1943, an attack on a Japanese convoy en-route from Sio to Lakona on 9 October 1943, an engagement near Buang Point on 8 September 1943, and an attack on Japanese barges near Sio Island on 5 October 1943. This document also contains a sketch map of patrol boat combat areas around the Sio area from August 1943. This item illustrates that, with the Japanese under increasing pressure from Allied naval forces, the need for improved landing manoeuvres and armaments had become a high priority. |
