Content: This item is a collection of examination records and progress reports for a company of soldiers from Gunma Prefecture recruited by the Imperial Army during 1941, and examined in Tokyo. Each report provides detailed personal information on the soldier in question, including his home address, immediate family connections, social background, and any pre-recruitment education or profession. It also includes medical information and any previous ailments (especially tuberculosis) suffered by the recruit. While all the soldiers were initially recruited as infantrymen and drafted into the 38th "Tôbu" Unit, there is also a space on the report to record the soldier's preferences regarding his future military career, stamped by the examiner in red ink (for example, "Infantry," "Aviation," "Field," "Engineering," etc.). Many of the reports contain a photograph of the recruit in uniform, and some of them include sections for evaluation of the soldier's subsequent progress, with marks given for activities such as educational studies, target practice, physical training and marching drill. Examiners' names for this group of recruits include TAKAI, KOGUCHI, NOZAKI and MISHIMA. This item was captured at Finschhafen, probably in 1944.
