Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Bulu Murli in West New Britain on 4 June 1944 during the Allied campaigns to capture New Britain. This item is a manual entitled "Lessons from actual experiences in eastern New Guinea operations, July 1942 - April 1943", issued by Imperial General Headquarters, Army Section on 18 November 1943. It contains a critique of the operations of the Independent Engineer Force in the Kokoda trail and Buna areas, with suggestions for training and future operations. Subjects considered include: morale, preparations for operations, anti-aircraft measures, Allied tactics and Japanese countermeasures, organisation and employment of forces, bivouacs, marching, communication and supply, reconnaissance, transportation, weapons and equipment, sanitation, intendance and training.

This item contains candid observations about the Japanese experience of operations during some of the hardest fighting of the New Guinea campaigns. It comments on failing Japanese morale, fear of automatic rifles, poor medical facilities, and other errors of judgement and strategy made on the Kokoda trail. The document also contains numerous references to Allied tactics and morale.
