Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for 2nd Lieutenant NAKA Masao of the 41st Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion 2nd Company 1st Platoon, who was captured in Gona on 27 January 1943. NAKA, a 24 year old 2nd Lieutenant from Fukuoka, was ill with malaria when he was captured by Australian troops. Initially, NAKA gave a false name to the interrogators. Even after he gave his real name, he remained guarded. He requested twice to be killed or allowed to commit suicide, as he believed an officer who was captured could not go back to Japan. NAKA provided information on unit's movement and organisation, with the names of officers. He had been promoted from 2nd Private to 2nd Lieutenant in a relatively short time as he passed tests.
