Content: This item is a collection of about 200 personnel files from 1943, for soldiers belonging to the Ikui Unit. Each file consists of a double-sided printed form, of which the first half is given to comprehensive personal information about the soldier in question. Details are requested regarding the soldier's family, marital status, place of origin (nearly all of the soldiers mentioned are from Ibaraki Prefecture), education, pre-recruitment occupation, genetic or acquired medical conditions, criminal record, religion, hobbies and interests, etc. On this page, the soldier is also asked for information regarding his own "hopes for the future," although most have left this space blank. On the back of the form, space is provided for details relating to the soldier's military career, including marks or grades achieved during training for activities such as target practice, drill, military studies and other duties. There is also a section requesting comment from a superior officer on aspects of the soldier's personal situation which could affect his military service and thus require "special attention," such as mental or other illness, "incorrect thoughts," attitude problems, or family problems. In every case however, the second page has not been filled in, although in one or two cases, the death of the soldier is noted in a section headed "details of post-recruitment career." This item was captured at Hansa Bay in July 1944.
