The Salamaua platoon of the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (NGVR) parading on ANZAC Day (25 April) 1940. The NGVR was a militia unit belatedly authorised by the Australian Government in 1939 to defend the Mandate. It was open to local European men living in the Territory.
