Content: | The collection consists of a photocopy of the diary of HISAEDA Akiyoshi, a mimeographed translation of the diary, and a photocopied newspaper cutting about the diary (The Canberra Times, 3 May 1972). HISAEDA was an Army Private, attached to the First Field Hospital, Bandô Unit, in the South Sea Force. The diary covers the period from 3 October 1941 to 16 November 1942, which corresponded to his enlistment to his death in Gona. The diary records his experiences in the occupations of Guam and Rabaul, the Battle of the Coral Sea, and the early New Guinea campaigns. On 5 June 1942 he heard the news that the Japanese special submarine force entered Sydney harbour and sunk an ememy ship. HISAEDA was killed by a native patrol in Gona and the diary was kept by L.B. Smith, an officer commanding the native camp in Gona in late 1942. The diary includes some drawings of Guam and Rabaul by HISAEDA. |
