| Content: | There are approximately 350 items in AWM 82 that have been classified by ATIS as B documents. These were considered not to contain information of immediate operational value, but were to be retained for possible future use. Although ATIS had accumulated some 200,000 B documents by the end of the war, the current location of most of this material is unclear. The material consists of personal items such as pay books, military pocketbooks, and savings books, as well as maps, service records, unit's field diaries and other military administrative documents. The documents were collected primarily from New Guinea, though some were captured from New Britain or Dutch New Guinea (Irian Jaya). The scattered nature of the provenance of the material does not provide a coherent picture of Japanese wartime operations in the Pacific. Rather, the material provides a valuable addition to existing sources, and in some cases examples of documents usually lost or destroyed on the battlefield. |
