| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Mokmer, Biak Island, on 26 June 1944 during the Allied attacks of Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is booklet entitled "Report on investigation of illegal firing by native policeman Petorusu", issued on 21 April 1944 by the Ume Organisation. The report concerns the firing of a pistol by native policeman Petorusu Warikara at Anggopi village on Biak Island. The report concluded that although the shot fired by Petorusu was not aimed, he might have fired the pistol to threaten the Japanese Army. A death sentence was passed for Petorusu and the Village Chief, Natanieru, who was charged with asking for a demonstration of the pistol. The sentences were to be carried out at the earliest possible date as a lesson to the natives. It is not clear from this document if the sentences were carried out. In English, Petorusu is Petrus and Natanieru is Nathaniel. |
