Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for Civilian Military Employee SHIMOMIDA Higari of Nozaki Unit, who was captured on Goodenough Island on 6 April 1943. SHIMOMIDA, a 19 year old civilian deckhand on Kenbu Maru from Kumamoto, was was captured by Australian troops when he and his colleagues were staying in a local village after Kenbu Maru was sunk on the way to Lae. During the interrogation, SHIMOMIDA provided information on ships he had worked on, namely Shiki Maru and Kembu Maru, and the social situation in Japan. He was called up to work on the ships and paid by the shipowners. He did not have much information on military organisation. |
