Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) interrogation report for Superior Private JA147954 of 5117 Independent Anti-aircraft unit, who was captured on Wakde Island on 19 May 1944. JA147954, a 29 year old Superior Private from Miyazaki Prefecture, was suffering from malaria and, while retreating inland, became separated from his unit and was captured by US troops while attempting to make his way round the north-east coast of Wakde. During the interrogation, JA147954 provided information on the organisation and history of his unit, Japanese searchlights and anti-aircraft guns, his inclination to surrender to US troops rather than Australians because they were considered kinder and more easy going, sightings of Allied prisoners of war between February and July 1943, Japanese prison camps, Allied attacks, Allied bombing tactics and losses. The appendix includes an organisational chart for the 5117 Independent Anti-aircraft unit and a basic sketch of Wakde Island.
