Biographical / Institutional info:The National Institute for Defense Studies was founded in 1952. Its library contains most extant original documents for the study of Japanese involvement in the Second World War. The institute's Military History Office was responsible for the collection of documents for the compilation of the 102 volume Official War History, published between 1966 and 1980.
Content:These records consist of original military documents and reports produced by the Demobilisation Ministry of the Japanese Government in the immediate post-war period. They constitute the primary collection of original materials for the study of Japanese involvement in the Second World War. They include war diaries, battle and operations reports, military orders, and other field reports and documents. They also include reports, memoirs and statements produced in the post-war period.

There are approximately 1,800 documents in the collection that relate to operations in areas where Australian units were involved. These have been categorised as follows:
South East Area Army operations (approx. 663 records);
North of Australia Army operations (approx. 421 records);
Army Air operations in New Guinea, Solomons, and Bismarck Archipelago (approx. 330 records);
Malaya and Java operations in the South West Area (approx. 480 records);
Central strategic instructions for Army operations (unknown quantity).

At present, this database details only the first three of these categories.
