Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Biak on 27 June 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is a training manual entitled "Reference on the use of smoke", issued by the Inspectorate of Military Training in January 1943 and received by the 222nd Infantry Regiment on 29 October 1943. It contains information on the general principles of using smoke and instructions on its use in attacking positions, in river-crossing attacks, landing operations and anti-tank combat. It includes an appendix on firing smoke shells from mortars, and charts and sketches showing examples of use of smoke by an army, division and infantry battalion in various situations. |
