| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Biak on 15 June 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item contains a number of charts listing over 1000 vessels, giving number, name and tonnage. It also contains a report entitled "Shipping report 31 Anchorage Headquarters", covering shipping activity at Hollandia during March 1944. The report includes an assessment of shipping transport activity, commentary on the impact of increased Allied air activity, coal and water supply, and a commentary on the future of Japan's campaign. Given the heavy losses sustained by the Japanese, the report commented that "from the standpoint of convoys it seems a distressing situation for the future." ATIS staff recorded that the document was a "candid, specific, comprehensive report on shipping activities under fire". |
