Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Salamaua on 20 August 1943 during the Japanese retreat from campaigns in the Owen Stanley Ranges. This is an incomplete instruction manual entitled "Fortification manual, volume 1 (revised 1941)", issued in August 1941 by SHINOZUKA Yoshido, Commandant of the Army Military Academy. It contains information on the construction of field fortifications, communications, latrines, infantry and artillery position, offensive fortifications against strong positions, booby traps, shelters for anti-tank weapons, wire entanglements, wells, fireplaces and lighting installations. Issued before the war commenced, this manual served as a general reference work for fighting troops. |
