Content: This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on booby traps used by the Japanese. The enquiry was received on 30 July 1943 and an answer despatched on 4 August 1943. It was a request for information on the topographical features (including roadways, high water marks, soil composition, vehicle access, local defences and offshore obstructions) of the Huon Peninsula, in particular the area between Buso and Buhem rivers, Cape Arkona, Hanisch Harbour and Finschhafen. The answer from ATIS stated that no prisoners of war had been takenwho had knowledge of the region's geography and the few maps captured were without detailed markings. The research report did contain information on ocean currents, tidal patterns and roads. It also refers to "terrain studies" of Lae, Finschhafen and the Lower Markham Valley. This information was sought in preparation for the Huon Peninsula campaigns which commenced in September 1943.
