| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Iboki (east of Cape Gloucester) on 1 March 1944 during the Allied campaign to retake New Britain. This item is a pamphlet entitled "On infantry–artillery co-operation", issued in June 1943 by Tsuki 7384 Force (53rd Infantry Regiment, 17th Division). It was compiled from the artillery training manual, the artillery firing manual and the infantry training manual and includes information on the organisation of artillery batteries, communication, the psychological attributes required of the artillery soldier and tactical employment. This item reveals something of the importance the Japanese Army placed on the use of artillery in jungle warfare, particularly its ability to demoralise enemy forces. |
