| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Morotai on 24 September 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item contains two documents, one entitled "Examples of operations against high speed boats", issued on January 1944 by Shipping Group Staff (Operations), and another entitled "Main characteristics of United States Army landing operations", date and issuing authority not stated. Both items were extracted from a file entitled "1944 training material", kept by the 36th Division Sea Transport Unit. The first document is an assessment of nine engagements between Japanese small boat units and Allied torpedo boats at Mongi, Hardenberg, Blucher and Buang Points, and Cape Cretin between December 1943 and January 1944. The second document outlines the main characteristics of United States Army landing operations, including use of air power, capturing of advanced air bases, organisation of landing forces, sketches of tactical formations of landing craft, secret reconnaissance before landing, marine raider forces (ranger forces), marine paratroopers, and special landing forces (amphibious engineer force and amphibious force). |
