Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Hollandia (Jayapura) on 25 April 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item contains three booklets on the subject of poisoning and propaganda entitled "Methods of using simplified poison testing set", issued by AOKI Shigemasa, KOREA 2086 Force (20th Division) on 30 September 1942; "Enemy fifth column poison activity as revealed in Central China", issued in May 1941 by Tama Force; and, "Propaganda organization and affairs of Japan, China and the Expeditionary Army", by YAMAGUSHI Tatsu, dated January 1942. The first booklet contains information on methods of using a poison tester to detect bacteria or poison in food and water supplies. The second item describes instances of poisoning by "fifth column" elements in China between 1938 and 1941. It details the reasons for such activity and ways to counter them. The third publication describes the creation of a Japanese propaganda department and the organisation of the "Intelligence Bureau", the "Propaganda Department" and the "Intelligence Department" of the China Expeditionary Army. It also contains information on propaganda methods and intelligence gathering techniques. |
