Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) translation of a Japanese publication captured at Namber (Noemfoor Island) on 12 July 1944 during the Allied attacks on Japanese positions in northern Dutch New Guinea, which were intended to isolate the 18th Army at Wewak. This item is a reference manual on airfield survey and construction, issued on 1 April 1943 by the 19th Army Staff. It includes general remarks on survey techniques, construction and camouflage of runways, and estimates of time, labour and materials required for airfield construction. This item also includes sketches of airfields to be constructed at Ufu, Krai, Lingat and Madowi. The document notes that airfield construction had moved away from the broad, exposed square or round field. Instead, the trend was towards the "underground fortress type" airfield, with aircraft revetments. |
