Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on Japanese observation posts on New Britain, New Ireland and Bougainville. The enquiry was received on 28 October 1943 and an answer despatched on 15 November 1943. This report contains information on the location of Japanese watching posts and patrols, picket boat patrols in the Rabaul area, patrols and garrisons on Buka and Bougainville islands, evidence of Japanese interception of Allied communications. It also contains a brief overview of the capture of two Australian coastwatchers Page and Talmadge in June 1943 (see RR-32 and RR-32 supplement). Little information was available about the fate of these two men, expect that they were transferred to Seki Maru and taken to Kavieng. The report concluded that the Japanese had established a network of watching posts around the entire coast of New Britain, which intensified in the area around Rabaul. Watching posts were less evident on New Ireland and concentrated around Nabuto Bay. There were few observation posts on Bougainville, but Japanese patrols and garrison forces were plentiful, particularly on the south and east coasts. The report also contains a map showing the location of observation posts and garrison units throughout New Britain and New Ireland, a detailed map of the main garrison units, anti-aircraft emplacements, radar, searchlights and defensive positions in the Rabaul area in December 1942, and a chart showing the strength of the Rabaul land defence unit. |
