| Content: | This is an Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) research report on Japanese methods of interrogation. The enquiry was received on 22 October 1943 and an answer despatched on 24 October 1943. This report provides information from a range of sources on the examination, treatment and interrogation of Allied prisoners and natives. ATIS researchers state that methods and treatment varied with the situation and commander. Of note are the accounts of the execution of prisoners of war and the emphasis placed on questioning Allied prisoners about chemical and gas warfare. The report also includes a reference to an ATIS Spot Report (no. 155), which suggested that the Australian Government had shown "considerable skill and kindness in their dealings with the natives". It also includes a list of phrases used in interrogations taken from "English Japanese phrase book for military use" (EP-3). |
